Ten years ago there was this cheerleader that moved to a creepy little town in California, and as much as I fought it, she weaseled her way into my life. Okay, I know Sunnydale doesn’t really exist, but I did fight Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I fought not to watch that show; and, of course, I lost. I remember seeing the movie during one of our infamous bad movie nights, and though Paul Rubens was funny, it was hardly worth its own television series. I wasn’t gonna watch and no one could make me! I battled it out for about a year, but then I lost so very, very badly.
It was bright and okay not so shiny high school day, when a friend of mine told me about this great show she’d watching and I needed to see it. Again I heard the curse of Buffy’s name and I politely tried to say no thanks. Unfortunately said friend was also someone who could physically make me (damn that hoodie she was good at using as a net!). She sat me down and commanded, “Watch”.
And watch I did. I was hooked after that one episode. Now I’ve been grabbed by TV shows before, but nothing was quite like what BtVS has done to me. I literally grew up with Buffy, Xander, and Willow. It didn’t matter that I was a year older than the characters (much like Oz) we went through the same rights of passage, the same emotional ups and down, we even lost a parent. I related to them all, even some of the villains. One of which I’ve been playing online for, Gods, seven years now. That makes me old doesn’t it? Geezer-like, even.
It’s because of this show that I found the love of my life, who has saved me more times that I can count. I’ve found friends and family through the association of this mere TV show and I’d never give that experience up for anything. Who knew that Buffy saving the world each week would be part of my personal destiny? Go figure.
